How To Change The Drive Belts Of A Toyota Mr2

It is a simple repair to replace the Toyota MR2 engine belts or accessory belts. Over time, drive belts become worn from heat buildup and the strain that constant tension places on them. One of your accessories might fail because the belt starts to crack or break. This can be prevented by checking your belts frequently and having them replaced if necessary.

You can loosen the tensioner by loosening the lock bolt using a wrench. Toyota MR2 has multiple drive belts, rather than a serpentine one. Therefore each belt must be taken out separately using its own tensioner and lock bolt.

Push down on the alternator, water pump, or A/C pumps until you feel the belt come out.

Attach the drive belt to the crank pulley and accessory.

Tension the belt until it has less than a quarter inch of deflection. Use a ruler to check the tension. Place it vertically next to the belt. Measure how low you can push the belt by pushing down on it. It is loose if you can push the belt down more than half an inch. The belt may be too tight if you can’t push it down more than a quarter-inch. This could lead to accessory damage.

  • Attach the drive belt to the crank pulley and accessory.
  • Turn the tensioner so that the belt has only about half an inch of deflection.

Tensioner should be secured by tightening the lock bolt

You may have to use small tools if you are unable to reach the lock bolt or tensioner with a wrench.
