Lies that Bind is a popular Kenyan drama series that revolves around the wealthy Juma family. It is full of drama, intrigue, love and suspense. It is a story about how the love for money can destroy a family. When the head of the family, Mr. Juma, dies of a cardiac arrest, his three wives and their children, together with his conniving brother begin to fight over who gets to inherit the vast fortune left behind.
1) The beautiful Maureen Koech is part of the cast.
She won the title of Best Supporting Actress 2013, at the Africa Magic Viewers’ Choice Awards (AMVCA) held in Nigeria in March. Maureen is a sight for sore eyes. Her flawless complexion, long dark hair and petite frame are a jaw dropper. This girl has got it going on!
2) Lenana Kariba, who’s cast as Joseph Juma, has the best diction on
Kenyan television.
Need I say more? This guy should have been a poet. Throw in his good looks and easy charm and he becomes the type of dude to take home to meet mum. TV is so much easier to watch when Lenana is around.
3) This isn’t a Mexican soap opera.
Is it just me, or do all Mexican soaps revolve around tears? Even the men cry, for Pete’s sake! On Lies that Bind, there’s no such thing. There will definitely be a few tears shed, but just from the ladies, I promise! Cue huge relief!
4) The feisty Edith played by Florence Nduta is more than a handful.
Edith is such a drama queen! She knows what she wants, and does whatever it takes to get it. She may step on everyone’s toes to get to the top, and has no apologies to make for it. In Edith’s world, it is all about Me! Me! and Me!
5) Naomi Ng’ang’a who plays Mama Sweetie is a hoot.
She’s hilarious in the shadiest of ways, and does it effortlessly. In one of her scenes, Mama Sweety walks up to a group of her girl friends and says, ”Ladies and gentlemen, today we’ll celebrate, because I’m the new head of the women’s guild.” That’s like giving a monkey a
machine gun.
6) Uncle John Juma always has something up his sleeve; he’s definitely
one to watch!
He is a manipulative old man whose greed for money takes him to extreme levels. He would go to the the extent of shooting his best friend just to get a hold of his designer socks. I kid you not!
7) The chemistry is REAL.
The type of romance that is captured here is the real deal. There are no princes riding off into the sunset or emerging from the horizon to declare their love for their girls. It is plain, simple, good ol’ Kenyan love that we can all relate to.
